MES vs ERP: Which System Runs the Factory Floor
The confusion is understandable: both systems claim to manage production, both show up in the same vendor meetings, and the demos look similar from across the table. The difference fits in one sentence. An ERP counts the money. A MES runs the line. Everything else in this article is what that sentence means when you are standing on the factory floor at six in the morning.
What an ERP Does Well
An ERP (SAP, Odoo, Microsoft Dynamics, or in many mid-market factories, accounting software with production modules bolted on) is the system of record for transactions. Purchase orders, inventory valuations, bills of material, costing, invoicing. When a shipment of finished goods leaves the gate, the ERP is where that shipment becomes revenue. A good ERP is excellent at this, and if yours is working, keep it.
The Gap an ERP Cannot See
Ask an ERP what happened on line 2 this morning and it will answer with what someone typed into it: an order, a planned quantity, maybe a completion entry hours later. The ERP does not know that the machine jammed twice, that the operator reworked forty units, or that the material lot was switched mid-run. That reality lives at the machine, and it is exactly the gap a spreadsheet or a WhatsApp group ends up filling.
This is why "we have an ERP" and "we run production on Excel" are not a contradiction. Most factories have both, and the space between them is where execution actually happens, unrecorded.
What a MES Adds
A manufacturing execution system occupies that space deliberately. It takes the work order the ERP created and dispatches it to the terminal at the line. It records output, scrap, and downtime against that order as the machines run, drawing from the same data a SCADA or OEE layer already collects. It ties every unit to machine, operator, and material lot. Then it hands the confirmed production numbers back to the ERP, where they become inventory movements and cost entries.

How the Two Systems Hand Data to Each Other
The integration is deliberately boring, and it should be:
- Downstream: the ERP releases a work order; the MES receives it as a production instruction. A CSV drop or a simple API call is enough at mid-market scale.
- Upstream: the MES reports completions, scrap, and rework; the ERP posts them against the order. No one re-types anything.

If your factory has working accounting but production truth lives in spreadsheets, the ERP question is already answered and the MES is the missing layer. If neither exists, an ERP (or decent accounting software) usually comes first: you cannot run a business without knowing the money, while MES without an ERP still works, it just hands its confirmations to a CSV until the ERP arrives.
What not to do: buy an enterprise suite that promises both, and migrate everything at once. That is the six-to-eighteen-month project. The mid-market path is keep the books where they are, put execution software on one line, and let the two systems shake hands over a file format nobody needs a consultant to read.

Can an ERP do what a MES does?
Partially, with effort. ERP production modules record what people enter, when they enter it. They do not listen to machines, dispatch to line terminals in real time, or tie units to material lots automatically. Some enterprise suites sell a MES module on top of the ERP; by then you are buying both systems from one vendor at enterprise prices.
